The city of Bath is an architectural gem, possibly the most perfect Georgian City in England. It nestles in the foothills of the Cotswolds, being carved from the beautiful honey coloured sandstone that was mined from local quarries. It was first a Roman Spa town before disappearing into quiet oblivion for centuries. Then, in the 18th. Century it again became the centre of fashionable life and the city flourished as a resort for the rich, the famous and those that aspired to be either. It now has a population of about 80,000 people and has matured into a culture that is comfortable with itself at all levels. It has managed to marry the two opposites of history and forward vision with considerable panache. The city centre is currently being redeveloped in a sympathetic yet visionary style that embraces the best elements of respect for its past whilst anticipating the needs and aspirations of the people who live, study and work there.
The City is full of distractions; during the day, cafes, restaurants and coffee shops compete for your patronage, whilst there are dozens of bars, pubs and nightclubs to keep you entertained right into the night. The Arts thrive in the form of world famous live theatres, multi-screen cinema, museums, galleries and in a myriad of other forms. For the sports minded there is Rugby Union and county level Football, there is a half marathon run through the city streets that now attracts over 10,000 runners each year . There are cricket clubs, gymnasiums and a multitude of other organised activities and spectator sports to occupy the minds and bodies of the most demanding of athletics fans.
The City has two Universities that offer a wide range of courses. The University of Bath was established in 1966 and offers leading courses in physical sciences, mathematics, architecture, management and technology. The Bath Spa University College was granted degree awarding powers in 1992 and in 2005 was granted university status specialising in the areas of art and design, education, English and creative studies, historical and cultural studies, music and the performing arts and social sciences.
It is a privilege to spend time and to study in this city. With so many distractions on hand you need a place of the highest quality in which to retreat to. A base that you will be happy to come home to each evening, a place that is safe, warm, comfortable and contusive to study. A home from home
